Ford 427 SOHC, the best engine of the muscle car era.

Ahem. ZL1 427. 530 real world HP and Chevy actually had the guts to install it in production cars, unlike Ford’s crate-only SOHC. Still the baddest production car engine from the era.

Overhead cams? Still more advanced than a GM V8.

Are they real world if it comes with a blower?

Perhaps you’re confusing the Gen IV small block based LSA motor in the new camaro ZL1 with the old all aluminum GEN IV big block from the 60's

Calling it a production motor is stretching it, since in the Camaro you had to know how to order one through COPO, and with only 3 being installed on Corvettes.

I am. Did not know it was a name before.

Corvette 427/435hp, technically the most powerful 427 (on paper) you could buy. You had to be in the loop to know about the misdirection on the L88.

Ya know the 427 SOHC ran a 6 ft timing chain that tended to eat itself alive because it relied on splash oiling. Idling for more than 20 mins would cause engine damage.

I think they made 72 of them in total. 3 vettes and 69 camaros.

I mean the dual quad 427 SOHC was rated at 657HP. It is the highest rated engine of the muscle car era, but it wasn’t installed in cars. It was a parts counter only engine. Granted these are all “Gross” HP ratings so they are most likely BS.

Definitely not a “street” engine.

yeah 69 Camaros were built, with the possibility of a few more and 2 or 3 vettes. I think then a handful of crate motors were assembled. I know Yenko cast his own version in the 70s, identical to the GM pieces but with Yenko cast into the block

Not being in a production car is how they can slap a big hp number on it. If they had stuck it in a car it would have been rated in the 400s. All the brands were under rating the motors. The L88 Corvette was way more motor then the tri power motor I listed but they didn't want idiots to kill themselves so it was rated less. The Z/28s 302 is another great example of an hugely under rated motor

All the Gross HP ratings were lies, mostly to the low side.
